As it turns out, Christopher Nolan has pulled another fast one on us. That’s just how he is, that tricky bastard. But then, I guess that’s why we love him. Anyway, barely a day after I posted my Dark Knight Rises update, I found myself browsing the web, only to discover that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s roles in the film have both been revealed. Needless to say, they aren’t what anyone expected…
Christopher Nolan planning his next round of mind-fuckery.
According to Deadline, Marion Cotillard will be playing Miranda Tate, a character of Nolan’s own invention, much like Rachel Dawes. Tate is described as “a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham”, which doesn’t really give us much to go off of. A love interest, possibly? Batman is currently lacking one, thanks to Rachel Dawes’ death, but I was kind of hoping for a little Bat-on-Cat action, if you know what I mean. This news also points no Talia al Ghul, which in my opinion is pretty disappointing. After all, the inclusion of the daughter of the villain from Batman Begins would give the trilogy some closure and wrap things up nicely. However, the good folks over at ScreenRant point out that Tate might in fact be Talia al Ghul, which does kind of sound like something Nolan would do.

Deadline also reports that JGL will be playing the part of John Blake, “a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon” and another creation of Nolan’s. I was really hoping to see JGL in the role of villain, so I’m rooting for Blake to be some sort of corrupt cop or something like that. The description is pretty vague, so it’s all up for speculation, I guess. Honestly I hadn’t really gotten my hopes up about JGL playing Alberto Falcone, so this isn’t too much of a downer for me. I am pretty upset about his character’s name, though. “John Blake” just sounds pretty douchebag-y to me.

All in all, it would be unwise to make any assumptions about the characters at this point, seeing as Nolan is sure to make us all look like dumbasses if we do.
